What is a domain?

Simply put, a domain name is the web address for a website, for example: www.LegalWebPro.com. Your website is hosted on your domain and Internet users will be able to view your website by going to your domain. Also note that you can have email accounts associated with your domain, for example: support@legalwebpro.com.  

How do you get a domain?

Domain names can be obtained by registering or purchasing one through a provider (such as LegalWebPro). When you sign up for a website with LegalWebPro, Step 2 will ask you for your domain name of choice. If your domain is available, LegalWebPro will acquire it and maintain it for you as long as you are a client of LegalWebPro.

How do I see if my domain is available?

You can run a free search using LegalWebPro to determine if the domain name you want is available. Be sure to enter the full domain name, such as legalwebpro.com. *It is important that you do not forget the domain ending (.com/.net/.org). You can search for domains here.

What if the domain name I want is taken?

Regardless of how unique a domain name may be, there is a chance that someone else has already taken it. If your preferred domain is already taken, you may attempt to purchase it from the current owner or wait to see if the existing owner releases it (which may never occur). If the domain you like is taken, your best bet is to attempt to find a similar domain.

Note that domain name come with a variety of endings, such as:  .com, .net, .org, .info, .us, .co, .biz, .tv, .me, and more. If the .com choice is taken, try another ending like .net.

Also note that while spaces and punctuation are not allowed in domain names, hyphens can be used and are a way to create unique domains. For example, since www.LegalWebPro.com is taken, you may wish register www.LegalWebPro-Example.com.

What if I already have a domain name?

If you already own a domain name, LegalWebPro can use it to create a new website for your legal practice. There is no additional fee for using an existing domain and you get all of LegalWebPro’s features. Also, if you have existing email with a domain you already own, nothing has to change with the way you access your email.

Depending on how your existing domain is held, some domain settings will need to be changed; however, in many cases this can be completed in as little as minutes. In some instances, domain names need to be transferred from the existing host to LegalWebPro and LegalWebPro does not charge any additional fees for domain transfers.

Who is the master of my domain?

You are the master (owner) of your domain at LegalWebPro and LegalWebPro will manage and maintain your domain for as long as you are a client. If you should desire to depart from LegalWebPro, you are free to move your domain to another host.

What are typical domain names for lawyers and law firms?

It is very common for lawyers and law firms to use domains based on the name of their practice such as “JohnDoeLawFirm.com” or “JohnDoeLaw.com” or “LosAngeles-PersonalInjuryLawyer.com.” Your domain name can be anything you want it to be as long as it is available.

Can I have more than one domain name?

Yes — your website can be setup to go to multiple domain names. Note that if you acquire more than one domain through LegalWebPro, there may be additional setup fees.
